Listening defined means “to give attention with the ear; attend closely for the purpose of hearing; give ear; to pay attention; heed; obey.
Even the definition of LISTENING infers the inclusion of DOING!
(James 1:21)admonishes us to “RECEIVE with meekness the engrafted word, which is ABLE to save your souls.”
To receive “with meekness” meant to receive with a humble and uncontentious spirit!
(James 1:22)says, “But be ye DOERS OF THE WORD, and NOT HEARERS ONLY, deceiving your own selves.”
They had heard this doctrine; they had believed it; but they had put it to no practical use.
What was happening at the time of this writing is still happening today. One who does nothing with what they have heard has simply reasoned themselves into a state of carnal security, deceiving themselves!
We are admonished to be DOERS of the Word…systematically and continually!
(James 1:23-24) say, “For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
This metaphor is very simple and easy to understand. A man wishes to see his own face, and how, in its natural state, it appears; for this purpose he looks into a mirror, by which his real face, with all its blemishes and imperfections, is displayed. He is affected with his own appearance; he sees deformities that might be remedied; spots, and impurities, that might be removed. While he continues to look into the mirror he is affected, and wishes himself different to what he appears, and devises a plan on how he can change what he sees staring back at him. However, after walking away from the mirror he soon forgets what manner of person he was, because the mirror is now removed, and his face is no longer reflected to himself. When this happens he is no longer focused on what he saw, and the need to change slowly disappears.
The doctrines of God, faithfully preached, are just like a mirror. He who HEARS (LISTENS) cannot help discovering his own character, and being affected with his own appearance; he sees what needs to change, and makes up his mind to do what he must do to make it right; but when the preaching is over…when the mirror is removed, he soon forgets what manner of man he was; and thus deceives himself.
Here is how it plays out: We hear the Word and are convicted of some defect, some shortcoming, some failure that we need to clean up. But as soon as we walk out from under the Word, we are distracted by the world and its affairs and we soon forget to do what the Word of God told us to do.
Ignoring…even forgetting about what you have become is NO EXCUSE for NOT DOING something about it!
(James 1:25) says, “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and CONTINUETH THEREIN, he being NOT a FORGETFUL HEARER, BUT A DOER of the work, THIS MAN SHALL BE BLESSED IN HIS DEED.”
In other words: HEARING + DOING = BLESSING
HEAR the Word.
DO the Word.
It’s really that simple.
IF you hear the Word, but are not being BLESSED, your first question should be WHAT am I NOT DOING?
